We all equate boosting our metabolism with moving around and being active. This can be a challenge if we’re stuck at home, however.

The good news is that there are ways we can accomplish this while at home, whether we’re staying in due to the coronavirus threat or if there’s just bad weather outside.

Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has four of the best ways to keep your metabolism in tip-top shape while indoors.

  • Food as Fuel

You know that eating too much is bad for your metabolism, but eating too little can also be bad as well. Eating breakfast will get your metabolism going in the morning, and not having enough overall calories will turn your metabolism against you, as your body will lose muscle mass.

  • Interval Training

HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts are the best way to lose weight and increase your metabolism, according to the experts. There are plenty of YouTube videos that run you through aerobic versions of these exercises, and it’s even better if you have some dumbbells at home. You can also accomplish this by running, biking, or even walking. Just go at your normal pace and add 30- to 60-second bursts of speed six to 10 times over the course of your work out.

  • Eat Enough Protein

Protein helps muscle gains from breaking down and keeps your metabolism going. Good sources of protein include steak, chicken breast, ground turkey, beans, and hard-boiled eggs.

  • Get a Good Night’s Sleep

If you’re routinely getting fewer than seven hours of sleep per night, your metabolism is going to suffer as a result. Sleep deprivation causes the body to burn fewer calories and cortisol levels increase, which stores excess fat.
