What You Need to Know About Diabetic Retinopathy
Damage to the retina in the eye is one of the most common complications of diabetes. Prolonged high blood sugar damages blood vessels throughout the body, and the retina—also known as the optic nerve—is no exception. Unchecked, diabetic retinopathy can lead to vision loss and blindness.
Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has details on the risks and treatments for diabetic retinopathy.
- Early Signs Are Tough to Detect
The condition may be progressing without any symptoms at first. Then, they can mimic typical eye problems like having trouble reading small print or seeing distances. But one difference is that diabetic retinopathy can cause these vision problems to come and go.
- Signs Can Become More Severe as the Disease Progresses
Damaged blood vessels can begin to bleed into the center of the eye, causing floating dark spots or streaks. Blurred vision, dark spots in the center of your field of vision, and difficulty seeing at night are symptoms of this.
- Get Regular Exams
Regular eye exams can catch this condition while it can still be treated. Your risk of developing it also increases the longer you have diabetes. Early treatment can stop the damage in its tracks and save your eyesight.
- Ways You Can Lower Your Risk
If you are diabetic, you can reduce the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy by controlling your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Also be sure that you are physically active, eat a healthy diet, avoid alcohol and tobacco products, and take your diabetes medication as prescribed.

Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on the 5 Best Weight-Loss Exercises
If your routine has been thrown off due to the quarantine thanks to the coronavirus threat, you’re not the only one. Additional time in the house (close to the kitchen) and less opportunities for exercise have led to a bit of unwanted weight gain in several people, which even has a name – quarantine 15 (much like the freshman 15 you may have put on in college).
With things beginning to open back up, along with the warm-weather months being upon us, it’s time to get to work to shed off those extra pounds.
To help with that, Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing presents five of the best exercises for weight-loss.
Box Jumps
Be sure to know your limitations, but if you have a wooden crate – or even a sturdy step – you can perform box jumps, which are exactly as they sound. Box jumps are high-intensity movements that will increase your heart rate and burn fat.
Burpees
Burpees combine several exercises in one. It starts with a dropping down for a push up, then springing to your feet, leaping and clapping over your head. And that’s just one! But it works all body parts and will burn calories in no time.
Planks
While burpees may be movement overload, planks require no movement. While laying flat on your stomach, get on your elbows and toes and hold your position. While maintaining this position requires mental focus, you’ll get plenty of physical benefits from this too.
Squats
Squats work the biggest muscles in the body and boost your metabolism. As an added bonus, they extra strength in the lower body will help you with your balance. If you need assistance performing the squat, you can use a chair.
Jogging
Take advantage of the mild weather and hit the pavement! Jogging will get your heart rate up and melt calories at the same time.

Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing With 5 Side Effects of Eating Too Much Pasta
There are several benefits to a pasta meal—it’s savory, leaves you feeling full, and is generally a cheap meal to produce and quick to cook.
But as you know, there is a such thing as too much of a good thing. Overdoing the pasta crutch at mealtime can lead to some health issues, some of which you may be familiar with and others that may be a surprise.
Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five of these adverse side effects to a pasta-rich diet.
1. Increased Diabetes Risk
Most pastas are loaded with simple carbohydrates, which is one of the biggest factors that lead to increased blood sugar levels in the body. Not surprisingly, high-carb diets can lead to an increased risk of diabetes.
2. Missing Key Nutrients
Filling up on pasta may not leave room for other foods like fruits and vegetables that allow your body to get all of the vitamins and nutrients that it needs.
3. Increased Risk of Heart Disease
In addition to a diabetes risk, having too many refined carbs like white pastas can raise your risk of heart disease as well.
4. Potential High Blood Pressure
In addition to the problems we mention above with refined carbs, an increase in blood pressure is another one of them. In fact, high blood pressure can be what leads to heart disease. Enjoying pasta just occasionally will help keep your risk down.
5. Weight Gain
Researchers have found that pasta is one of the foods that is overeaten the most. One serving is around one-half of a cup, but most have around four times that amount at home and even more at a restaurant. Especially ones that offer all-you-can-eat options. All those calories, especially at dinner time, can lead to putting on extra pounds.

Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on Boosting Your Metabolism While at Home
We all equate boosting our metabolism with moving around and being active. This can be a challenge if we’re stuck at home, however.
The good news is that there are ways we can accomplish this while at home, whether we’re staying in due to the coronavirus threat or if there’s just bad weather outside.
Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has four of the best ways to keep your metabolism in tip-top shape while indoors.
- Food as Fuel
You know that eating too much is bad for your metabolism, but eating too little can also be bad as well. Eating breakfast will get your metabolism going in the morning, and not having enough overall calories will turn your metabolism against you, as your body will lose muscle mass.
- Interval Training
HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts are the best way to lose weight and increase your metabolism, according to the experts. There are plenty of YouTube videos that run you through aerobic versions of these exercises, and it’s even better if you have some dumbbells at home. You can also accomplish this by running, biking, or even walking. Just go at your normal pace and add 30- to 60-second bursts of speed six to 10 times over the course of your work out.
- Eat Enough Protein
Protein helps muscle gains from breaking down and keeps your metabolism going. Good sources of protein include steak, chicken breast, ground turkey, beans, and hard-boiled eggs.
- Get a Good Night’s Sleep
If you’re routinely getting fewer than seven hours of sleep per night, your metabolism is going to suffer as a result. Sleep deprivation causes the body to burn fewer calories and cortisol levels increase, which stores excess fat.
