The United States (and the world) is still dealing with waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially through the highly contagious Delta variant, but many people continue to be hesitant about receiving a vaccine—which have proven to be safe an effective. Safety problems surrounding the vaccine are exceedingly rare and no widespread long-term side effects have been reported. In addition, while you still may get COVID-19 even after being vaccinated, you are up to 11 times less likely to be hospitalized or die from the virus.

Bannister Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has three more reasons why you shouldn’t wait to be vaccinated.

  1. Help End the Pandemic

The more people who have COVID-19 antibodies means that it will be that much more difficult for the virus to be able to transmit via the only main method it can—person-to-person. Between vaccinated people and those who have already had the disease, herd immunity can be achieved, even if regular six-month booster shots are needed for a while.

  1. Ease the Strain on the Healthcare System

Hospitals in certain parts of the country became overwhelmed over the late summer and early fall due to the Delta pandemic. Elective surgeries were postponed, hospital workers became exhausted, and one city in Florida even had to restrict water usage among residents because it was affecting how liquid oxygen was being used in the hospitals there. Keeping less people in the hospital system means there will be services available for those who need it.

  1. Protect Those Around You

Some people aren’t able to be vaccinated for medical reasons and others can but still have a greater chance of becoming ill due to pre-existing medical conditions. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell died in October despite being vaccinated because his immune system had been weakened due to a previous bout with cancer and Parkinson’s disease. So if you’re able to be vaccinated, you may be better protecting family members, friends, and members of the community.
